The much anticipated day has finally arrived! After nearly a month of training, Winnamocka counselors were absolutely pumped to get our Session #1 kiddos finally here! And what an Opening Day it was… campers with parents, grandparents, brothers, and sisters in-tow merged on Fort Jackson this afternoon. Some even saw a friendly pirate, who greeted the arriving cars. Counselors carried loads of luggage as everyone met their cabin counselors, re-united with camp friends, and met all our new campers in the courtyard of Fort Jackson. Campers were eager to share their events of the past year and say hello to all who entered the Courtyard.
Once checked in, cabins met together to learn names and play a few games before heading to The Wilderness Lodge Parking Lot for an all-camp introduction and a game of Ships ‘n Sailors! Jacob Chaisson won the game of Ships ‘n Sailors which means his cabin, Rhode Island, will get milk and cookies tonight after the closing of the gates. Afterward, everyone headed back to Fort Jackson where the girls competed against the boys in the Watermelon Spit. Whichever group got the most seeds into the bowl won bragging rights for the week. The guys brought their A-game and out-spit the gals 653 to 530! Way to go guys! Counselors then battled it out in a counselor competition of “Cheeto Head.” One counselor of each gender had shaving cream on their head, the rest of the counselors had a hand full of Cheetos puffs. The team that accumulated the most Cheetos on their counselor’s head, won the competition. The guy counselors were able to land more Cheetos, allowing the guys to go to the Wilderness Lodge for supper, while the girls checked their tree mail and went on a hunt to search for their cabin flag. The guys then hunted for their flags as the girls ate. The Kitchimockas prepared the all-time camp favorite, Upside Down Tacos.
Tonight, we will gather around the fire for some Winnamocka legends, the flying wombat, and the first spirit stick competition! What a great opening day for Session #1! I have a feeling it is going to be a GREAT week. Akcomanniway!
